View Full Version : What ARE those *weird files* in my directory?

When I FTP to my directory I notice the following files...
_private, _vti_bin, _vti_cnf, _vti_log, _vti_pvt, _vti_txt
Can anyone explain what these are in pursuit of? Are they useful? Am I missing out on something really peachy by not using them?
It is soooo embarassing to have to ask these undoubtedly stupid questions. Worse yet, the only emoticons AOH gives me are these steekeng blew smilies. :(

Yeah, but you can put those smileys into your threads here, it's just a matter of cutting and pasting what they give you and shazam... smiley linkage...

Ok, so the image tag isn't working... Wonder if Danny needs to turn that on or something.
Actually, looking more closely, it appears that html code is off, which, I assume, is what is preventing the display of my image link there.
Oh well

btw, I would assume that what you're seeing are hidden files of sorts... though I'm not certain why they're there... I'll turn to the tech guru of our boards for answers on this one.

Those files are used by FrontPage.
Here is a yellow smilie :-)

Nedani is correct, those files are the result of front page extensions. If you do not need front page extensions, please submit a help desk ticket and we will remove them.

Hee-hee. All of a sudden, multi-colored smilies!!! :hatpimp:
Gee, Gnomercy -- I don't think we're in Kansas any more. :wavey:
Danny - Uhhh, when I FTP into my directory, why can't I just delete those FP-extension files myself? [There's no problem here. I'm just trying to learn.]

If you are sure you want to remove those files than use your control panel to unistall the FrontPage extensions.

Thanks nedani. Uhhh... there's a reason why simple deletion would be unwise, right?

Yeah, but it's not a good idea. Best to do it the proper way, sign in to your WHM panel (Not your cPanel one) and un-install them.

Waaaa. Nobody lets me do anything.:bawling:
And STILL nobody tells me why a simple delete is baaaad. Obviously it izzz bad, but nobody say why.
Perhaps it's a religious thing.
By the way... thanks, Danny, for the housecleaning.

Install a program on your PC and the bulk of the files end up in the installation folder, while you'll have others that will end up in the windows/system folder. Then of course you'll have registry settings that link to the files etc.
If you were to just delete the main installation folder, you'd leave all the other files behind which would just file up your hard drive and a registra full of un-needed info would just slow it down.
However, if you used the proper uninstall routine, everything gets removed completely keeping your PC tidy and fast. :D
The same thing applies to the webserver. Just deleting those folders/files would have probably left other files elsewhere that you didn't know about and couldn't get to.

Marc - many thanks for the education.
Nedani, I checked your site. Uncluttered. Spartan. Eclectic. Calming. Peaceful. Loads really fast. :hatpimp:

I am glad you like my site. I think that I will have another version by the end of this month (if I will have some spare time). :)
It is not a text file. I am using the latest technology of webauthoring and media compression:
#~ cat>index.html
<html>
<body>
Hi!
</body>
</html>
CTRL+D
It is a new domain, and the only place where is listed is in this forum. GoogleBot visited my site but I don't know why or how. Never submited , etc.
I had another domain in the same situation but without an index.html . It was visited by google and around 25 people. I put a message there asking them how they found my site.
So ... if you need a high traffic site which will be visited by GoogleBot , it will load in less than a second and it will get traffic without any effort .... let me know. (limited offer for AOH members) :D :D

Here, stick this in a text file, name it index.php and upload to your webspace. Now everytime somebody visits your website, you'll get an email with the url that sent them. :D
// Call this file index.php
<?php
$emailaddress = "you@nedani.com";
$email_subject = "Nedani.com is popular today";
$email_body .= "Somebody visited your website and they came from:\n$HTTP_REFERER\n\n";
mail("$emailaddress", $email_subject, $email_body, "From: $emailaddress");
?>
<html>
<body>
Hi!
</body>
</html>
That'll be $100 please cha-ching :D
Was reading in another forum the other day about how some company this guy worked for had paid £15,000 (yes 15 grand) to a couple of guys for doing their website. He heard somewhere that these guys had heard that the site was aimed at 800x600 resolutions and so put the whole site in a table with width=800 and height=600 LOL
Web design charges are total rip offs..... I wish I could design websites :D

Nedani - Hey, let me know when your site is up & going. I'd like to have a look at it.
Marc - I saved your code for future reference. [REALLY did.] Not that I would ever use it. If I got an eMail every time someone visited my site I would be SNOWED UNDER in a deluge of... oh, 3 or 4 eMails/month.;)

A handy tip for you Bellgamin :D
Rename the file 404.php and edit the subject message to suit. Then go into your cPanel and Error Pages and point to the 404 Not Found script. :D
It wont tell you the file that isn't there, but it will tell you the page with the dodgy link on it.
