View Full Version : Spam Assassin?

I enabled Spam Assassin on my account. Does a really good job at labelling spam; all my mailing lists and things that *could* be possibly construed as spam aren't being labelled, so I think it's pretty safe, at least for me. However, I haven't been to figure out what else to do with it other than to have it label things as *****SPAM***** which makes for easy trash deletion. Is that all it does? Do I still have to rely on filters to actually delete spam from my server? The documentation on it and its website seem rather lacking and geared toward the techie rather than the average lay user.

As easy as this sounds, there is not an easy way to do it. However, I am always hesitant about deleting mails automatically.

I would rather write a rule (in outlook express) to move them to trash folder. That give me the chance to cull any keepers. Hardly ever find any, though.

Was hoping there was a way (other than adding filters on my server, which is tedious) to mass-delete them before they get d'lded to my computer in the first place, but I guess not. It's not that big a deal to add a filter on my computer at home to delete all *****SPAM***** in the subject line, but I'll be going on vacation soon and will have a slow dialup at my destination, so I'd rather delete them all in the first place so I don't have to d'ld them at all.;) Guess I got a little spoiled after getting cable.

You can change your message rule on your computer that you use for vacation so that it will either delete the messages strait off the server that contain "*****SPAM*****" before they are downloaded or set up the rule to leave it on the server and not download if they contain "*****SPAM*****" (you can then retrieve them when you get home to browse thru them to see if any were important).

Planet-Ed, is this doable in Outlook Express (I'm using v. 5 for Mac)? I don't see any rule options about deleting from server.

Under:
Tools
Message Rules|Mail

Select rule and press Modify....
At the bottom of the actions choices
you can

Do not download from server
or
Delete from server.

Good Luck, but be carefull.

I guess it's different for the Mac version. There are no server-related actions. There was just a "delete message" action, but it still d'lds it to your computer, then puts in your Deleted Items folder.:bawling:

From when I knew anything about the MAC, its operating system was called CP\M.

Sorry 'bout that.
