A while back, in safehex #2, I recommended a program [POP3 ScanMailBox] that does a good job of checking your mail on the server -- so you can clean out the crud & suspicious stuff B-4 downloading into your eMail client.
Lately I have been getting really hammered by HOSTILE spam. A major part of it is coming from Mailing Lists that somebody has been *so kind* as to subscribe my eMail address [unbeknownst to me].
More & more of this ML's messages are coming in. It takes at least 1 minute just to scroll through the "copy to" addresses of each message. No means of unsubscribing is given. Other involuntary "subscribers" have taken to sending messages to *STOP sending me this* to every name on the copy to lists. So the bloody problem is multiplying!
The program I recommended lets me kill this stuff on the server, but I started wanting something just a bit more aggressive than that.
Then I ran across a FREE program called MailWasher. This program not only lets me delete mail on the server, it also give me the option of BOUNCING the junk stuff back to the senders. I suppose the idea is that they will think my eMail address is defunct.
The program runs smooth as silk. I mean it's smooooooth. A joy to use.
