We're planning to shift some host accounts to AOH. Was almost ready to do the order and payment when my partner decided to do some last minute checks on server latency.

using a ping/http monitor, average AOH ping is about 10% slower than our current host.

There are also a few occasions where the ping was lost, or the http request timed out. Periods of high ping latency seems to coincide with our local peak periods but nevertheless we are a little concerned.

Has anybody experienced downtime or time outs on your sites?

Thanks!

p.s. AOH, sorry if we messed up your web stats a little with periodic ping and http request on the support page

I'm sure AOH admin folks will answer you pretty soon. When I was considering sign-up I always got super fast replies by sending my questions to...

support@alphaomegahosting.com

One of my favorite *speed test* sites is at...

http://www.alertsite.com/cgi-bin/tsite3.pl

They do pings, traceroutes, etc, of course. But the most revealing of their tests is called "Web Test" -- I like it because it gives comparative speeds of several well-known sites, as well as the one I'm testing.

I saw your thread a while ago but I was not replying as it appeared that you were looking for customer input. However, at Bell's proding I will comment on a few things.

Keep in mind that ping times are going to be relative to your distance from the server and is not a very good indicator of how fast the server is.

The fact that pings/http requests timed out coinciding with your own local periods of high network utilization indicates to me that maybe your local network connection might be overloaded.

We feel that the servers provide an excellent connection to the network and perform very well. We do monitor all servers for http response time, ping response time as well as other service availability.

I will shut up now as I am sure you are more interested in what our customers have to say.

Since I live in Hawaii, pings from my location to West Coast hosts are generally much faster than pings to hosts further east.

However, much of my site's traffic comes from middle & eastern US, Canada, & Europe. Alert Site's (http://www.alertsite.com/cgi-bin/tsite3.pl) speed tests are based from Chicago, so I think their data are very significant for my situation.

Emmanuel, I have had extremely good speed & up-time with AOH from day 1.

As a customer, I can assure you that EVERY single instance of a systems downtime or other issue at AOH has been clearly & quickly reported in this forum's threads entitled, "AlphaOmegaHosting Network Status." What you see there is absolutely ALL that there is, to date.

Much as I like the AOH folks, business is business. If ever they tried to hide or censor the system status threads, there would be BIIIIG trouble. Not just from me but from other customers as well.

So read the network status threads -- it's all there. Decide for yourself. Me, I love it here.

PS - You can see Netcraft's chart of "days since reboot" for AOH at...This Netcraft Chart (http://uptime.netcraft.com/up/graph/?mode_u=off&mode_w=on&site=www.alphaomegahosting.com&submit=Examine)

Thanks Bell (you seem to be on the forum a lot :D)

Sorry for the misleading content of my first post.

High latency is mostly during my local peaks, the same goes for my other host.

However, where AOH tmies out, my other host doesn't. This is why I am a little concerned.

I did check Netcraft prior to this, but apart from knowing the server's pretty much up most of the time, it doesn't tell me as much about the network reliability, does it? We're relatively new so between the two of us, we don't really know :D

It would be nice if somebody could also point out some freeware that would do traceroute and log all the hops so that we can tell if the problem was something in the middle and not AOH.

BTW, which data center are resellers hosted on?

Thanks again!

Reseller servers are located in Pennsylvania. A good traceroute program would be from analogx.com

Also, you might try some of the network based traceroute tools that don't depend on your connection/location. Samspade.org has one if I recall correctly.

I love AnalogX stuff but Hypertrace doesn't have a logging function, that's the main problem. :(

Well, that sorta defeats the purpose :D
I just want to make sure the routers along the path to AOH aren't flakey, given that we're like 21 hops away.

This is probably the only worry we have right now.
Did I say my partner and I love the fact you have a support forum? :D

Thanks again!

I agree the SamSpade one works really good and is free if I remember ... Another really good one is VisualRoute but it costs a bit ...

HostChart (http://www.hostchart.com:82)

Shows a LOT of info. I think that there is traceroute that allows you to choose destination and return. This can eliminate probs with slow dial up connections. Don't check time to your pc, use a different ip. I'm a MSN dialup user and they use UUNET to get to the backbone. UUNET regularly loses packets and times out.

Actually, you can download a program from sam spade that offers you all their tools, and allows you to create a log of the traces or other tests you do. I'm pretty sure it's freeware also.
