The following question is for both Admin types and normal humans who sleep at night.
It seems that the de facto standard, here at least, is vBulletin. Have you ever heard (good, bad, indifferent) of xmbforum.com?
Is is well manned on the servers? My page designer likes it and I would like to hear others.

I would STRONGLY recommend against xmb. It is well know to have major security flaws. While I understand that it is included in Cpanel's control panel, I will not recommend that anyone use it. If you don't like vB or its price, I would recommend that you consider Invisionboard or phpBB2.

I agree ... Stay away from XMB ... The flaw was so bad they shut down their downloads of it until they came out with a new release(and the new one is not included in cPanel) . The bug allows people to sign onto you board as an administrator to wreck havok on the site and delete the accounts ... There is a workaround by modifying the .httaccess file but I've seen post of it not working in some cases .. Cost 35.00 if you want to upgrade to the new one but I don't feel the features are worth it ...
Vbulletin has to be one of the most popular / highly supported / most customizable boards on the market. Only problem is its not free but its well worth the price for the features and support.
Invisionboard is faily new, free and had some bugs at the begging but those have been pretty much worked out and design on it has come along nicely. Supposably the database on this one uses little space and is very opimised and is reported to be better than vBulletin.
phpBB2 is another free board that is comming along nicely. Once thing I found out that I like is it integrates nicely into the Nuke-PHP and PostNuke Portals. Makes it easy to design a complete site and have a single login for bothe the portal and board being controlled as a module ....

Not that I doubted you, but I've been doing more study....

Wow. I also noticed that their (xmb) download section is turned off. Must be a reason........

If you don't want to go with vB go with Invision. Their first baord wasn't that great but Tuesday they'll release a new build of it that is supposed to being a lot of improvments.
vB is worth the cost in my opinion

Any tricks, traps or secrets about un-installing xmb. Looks to me after I remove the html reference to it, I'll just delete it, and it's folders. Hmmm, can it be that simple?
.......
Just found this thread. Thanks all!!

Another good one to take a look at is Burning Board (http://www.woltlab.info/), it's not free but at $25 dollars it's extremely affordable.

That is a pretty nice board. It looks a lot like vB though from looking at the admin cp I can say that it is no more advanced than Invisionboard 1.0, which is free. Plus with 1.1 being released today invision is now the closest thing to vB
Burning Board 2.0 blows away IBF 1.0, it has many more features including an unlimited number of sub-forums and sub-categories, custom profile fields, flat or threaded topic viewing, administrator sessions, user and forum statistics, split/merge topics, an event calandar, custom BB code, buddy list, block list, and a much easier to use template system. The only bad thing about WBB2 is it doesn't use language packs, but they plan to change that in the new release (2.1). Compare WBB2 with IBF 1.1 if you want, but not 1.0.
Speaking of which, I just downloaded Invision Board 1.1 a few minutes ago and installed it on my computer. Needless to say, I'm not very impressed. It was definately overhyped...the only drastic improvement that catches my eye is the new template system, it's a lot better than in 1.0. But, if I didn't already own a WBB2 license I would probably use phpbb2 over Invision Board. :)
