View Full Version : looking for a host for OurSpot.net
my current host will be shutting down at the end of the month, and I'd like to move the system, pretty much as is, to a new host.. and thus far, AOH seems darn snazzy.
so here's the basic questions-
how long have you been in business? and are you profitable? (I've been through too many hosts that can't afford to sustain themselves  )
do you run php's safe mode off? specifically looking for support of gallery.. ( http://gallery.sourceforge.net )
is there any reason you can image I'd have trouble hosting postnuke/xaraya CMS based sites here?
feel free to browse my site and let me know if you forsee any issues there...
(user/pwd=test/test)
who are your data centers?

We have a kb article that better explains our business history and can be found at http://www.alphaomegahosting.com/cgi-bin/kb.cgi?view=19&lang=en
We have servers in a couple of different data centers and will need a little more information about what plan you are looking at to further answer your questions.

Hi Dean :)
You've given a username and password for your site, but you didn't leave the url for it :D
Marc :-)
/me looks at title of initial post/topic... you're right marc... </smirk>
(no really- its in there!)
re: admin... it's really nothing more than a family portal.. very low traffic.. (if any other than me putting it up) ... most of the attention goes to the image galleries, shared addressbook, and the calendar.... all within a php-nuke/postnuke CMS structure (although I intend to go with the new PN fork- Xaraya as soon as its out if only because the calendaring modules is going with it...), kinda trying to be a mix of a journal, weblog, groupware kinda thing... that nobody really uses... except for the bursts of activites around the birth of a child where everyone wants to look at the pictures.
I have been running it with subdomains pointing to specific public galleries, and would like to do that- but it's not crucial..
The only other thing that I'd like to do is put up a trial portal for my work environment which would be the exact same thing as above (but with its own mysql db) minus the heavy emphasis on the image galleries.. and with alot more weight on trying to modify the calendar code for our facility/staff scheduling purposes...
as for the question on the data servers, i was hoping to see a)if your texas center was housed out of rackshack.net [which should theoretically increase some transfers from my users account, since they're owned by my ISP] or b) so I could check on the hops/carriers between it and me at home and at work... and just because I'm odd that way.. knowing that the machine you've puchased services off of has a physical existance makes it seem... well, more trustworthy? does that makes sense? I guess it goes back to having had too many hosts dissapear in the last couple of years...
anything else I can expand upon for ya?

Ah yes, I see it now. Nice to know that the art of putting url's in subject lines has not been forgotten.
www.OurSpot.net (http://www.ourspot.net)
Friendly and clickable. Yes it's that easy. :)
Marc :-)
couldn't make it too easy now could it? I mean heck, i don't want to take down the poor guys server a week or two early with a deluge of "test" cases....
that's what slashdot is for.... </double smirk>

Just installed Gallery, FTP works fine and it's probably easier that using SSH if that's what you're used to. On the config page it tells me that jhead and NetPBM are not installed or the paths are different than the default.
Danny, do you know if these are install for PHP, if not, can they be please or do they present a security issue?
Thanks.
Marc :-)

Was this posted to the wrong thread by accident?
nope- he's got the right place... ;)
installing netPBM and jhead locally secured by php's open_basedir for my virtual is now problem.. pretty standard in fact..
so have we (can we?) established that safe_mode is not an option? is there a link to phpinfo.php (or similar) that I can see php's flags?
is there shell level access in some form? telnet/ssh? can there be? (again, not necessary, but running config.sh for gallery is a heck of a lot easier than using an ftp client to chmod a pile of files while setting up... ) so even temporary access would be cool.
separately:
what's the webmail client you use ?(did i see it was IMP somewhere?- can't find it now, but I thought I knew that one)
many thanks...

The config page on that Gallery script tells me the following...
Success
PHP v4.2.2 is OK
Success
safe mode is off
Success
I can read your .htaccess file
Success
magic quotes are off
Success
mod_rewrite is enabled
Warning!
I can't find NetPBM
Warning!
I can't find jhead
Also says the last two are optional so if you don't have them no worries.
You can see my phpinfo.php file here (http://www.marcjames.co.uk/phpinfo.php) . Though this may be different on other servers.
There is shell level access with Cpanel (java applet through Cpanel portal, I've never tried connecting with a Telnet client). I don't know about Ensim (http://www.ensim.com), best go into chat and ask.
With Cpanel you get NeoMail (http://sourceforge.net/projects/neomail/) and Horde (http://www.horde.org/). Again I don't know what comes with Ensim (http://www.ensim.com) so best to ask.

Sorry for the apparent lack of response. I spoke with Dean on chat right after he pressed submit.

Hehehe So are you planning on installing jhead or NetPBM any time in the future?
Thanks
Marc :-)

Many customers have installed them locally for their installations, however, if you need them. Please contact me and let me know what you need.
