My yahoo account is getting a lot of spam so I intend to use an account on my domain. I would like to know two things. Outlook is checking the mail from 15 to 15 minutes. Is this acceptable? Do you have a minimum wait time between two checks?

The password is sent unencrypted and I get an error (server not supporting) when I try SSL\TLS for encryption.

So ... I am looking for two things:
-answer emails fast
-protect the password (the account)

Any tips are wellcomed.

We have not written a time in the TOS/configuration at this time. However, I may in the future consider changing that. I believe that 5 minutes is a reasonable minimum.

We don't currently support a secure, encrypted email service.

Any plans for future or this is not included in your hosting software?

Anything is possible. It depends purely on the demand and requirements/plans of integrating with the control panel.

5 minute minimum? Argh...that would be the end of me...

Rodzilla,
What do you mean? 5 min looks more than ok.

Well, lets look at the numbers for a moment.

Lets say you set your email client to check email every minute. Thats 1440 email checks a day. Lets say your domain has 10 users that do that. Now thats one domain with 14,400 email checks. Lets say we have 100 domains on a server that do that. That is 1,440,000 email checks on the server per day.

I see ... ;)

Ah, but that only works if people leave their email client open for 24 hours straight. I typically have it open for maybe 30-60 minutes a day, which would be a maximum of 60 checks. Now, were someone to check email every 5 minutes, this would mean 288 times per day, based on the previous assumption, compared with 60.. :)

But for you that would be 6-12 times instead of 30-60 times. Justification works the same.

But how many of those checks actually download something? It's a brief open/close connection to the server almost every time.

That is exactly the point. Why open up 4 unneccessary connections every 5 minutes? Does it really matter if you get that email at 2:01 vs 2:02 or 2:03 or 2:04, etc.

Btw, this has moved into a intellectual debate at this point...

Just want to say that I play a game that uses email to send and receive turns and some nights, when I have several games on the go at once, can be very busy and as each game is on a time limit, it's important to get the turn and send the new turn as quickly as possible. So my email client tends to be open and checking every 5 minutes for long periods of time.

When I worked for General Electric my email client checked every 60 seconds, which at the time was a necessity given my job and the additional responibilities I volunteered for. My email checks every 5 minutes now and if I didn't worry about missing a ticket for longer than 5 minutes, I'd probably set it out at 10 or 15. I can see some people needing to do it more frequently than every 5 minutes, but reasons beyond a basic convenience are slim.

Like Danny said, it's really just a intellectual debate, but hey, why not toss in my 2 cents :)
