Can you offer some suggestions on how to apply the hack and the impact on loading future updates?

from what i know, this hack makes no modiffication to the database, so upgrade should be fine :) you will just have to re-do the hack (which fairy quick) if you upgrade the board. It should be at www.vbulletin.org if i'm not wrong :p
