The other day I accidentally ran across a web host that charges $15/year [that's per YEAR, not per month] for 100m disk space & 4gig data transfer. As far as I can tell the owner is a nice fellow with a death wish. For much the same reasons as why I give $$$ to the Salvation Army, I forked over the 15 bucks & put one of my "it's - got - a - nice - sounding - name - so - I'll - grab - it" domains there. Just a home page.

That was 3 days ago. The host had about 30 minutes of downtime on each of the first 2 days I was with him. No skin off my nose -- what do you expect for $15/year? Today the roof fell in on the poor guy. Here's his 2-11-03 forum post under the server status thread...
~~~~~~~~~~
Here's a rundown basically of what happened today:
4:44PM EST -- Both Echo1 and Echo2 go down simultaneously for upgrades and powergrid maintenance. Estimated downtime is 5-15 minutes.
4:46PM EST -- I log on to instant messengers to get the word out that this is a scheduled upgrade and everything should be back up shortly. (heh :\)
5:15PM EST -- I'm getting a little worried, begin sweating, etc.
5:30PM EST -- Telephone call to my dedicated provider, word is that the downtime has been a little longer than expected, but should be back up shortly. Echo2 comes back on somewhere in between here and 6:00, without the upgraded parts.
6:00PM EST -- Telephone call produces the same results, nothing really groundbreaking has occurred yet.
6:45PM EST -- I make another telephone call, this time being informed that all server upgrades are taking place, and our servers are awaiting their upgrades. Echo2 goes offline for the hard drive upgrade.
7:00PM EST -- Echo2 comes back online. I'm fearing that Echo1 has been lost in the shuffle.
7:30PM EST -- It's been confirmed Echo1 has been lost in the shuffle... all I had to say was "I'm the guy with the server that's been down for nearly three hours" and they knew.
8:00PM EST -- Everything has returned to normal, backup systems have been configured and should be updating tonight, and have your daily backups readily available through your cPanel from here on out.
All in all.. the upgrade was a success. Heh... but... the downtime, left a heck of a lot to be desired! I once again apologize for the stupidity of my dedicated service provider. I am definitely in the market for a new one, if you have any suggestions, please let me know.
I truly hope the guy makes it. Doesn't look so good right now, though. The first-year failure rate is very nearly 100% among would-be web hosts who try to get started by low-balling their prices. That's why I picked AOH. Prices are low enough to be competitive, but not so low that they doom our host to fail, or else burn himself & his family out.
shaloha......bellissimo
I just discovered that the owner of the host outfit discussed above is only 16 years old. He started up last Oct. I have no idea how many clients he has, but his support board now has 209 members & 3 very knowledgeable tech support posters.
Sheesh, when I was 16 I had a job delivering newspapers.
Amazing how much things change in 40 years, ain't it :D
Truth be told, when my kids hit 16, I'm wondering what jobs they'll be doing. Or when I hit 55.... what will kids be doing then?
Ok, to much thinking for now.
Do you think our grankids will have ever seen a vinyl record? Or an 8 Track tape player? When I think of the changes I've seen in just the last 30 years, what will the next 30 years produce?
Gade,
Many kids today have never seen a vinyl record or an 8-track. There are some that have never used cassettes.
Think about this, a 23 year old today was born in 1980...... Oh, God I'm getting old...
What never ceases to amaze me is when I go into a store that sells alcohol. I'll see one of those signs that say "If you were born before "today's date" in 1982, then you can buy alcohol. Wow, that was the year I turned !!30!!
Nick[G-AB] Have you located a source for turntables? That's a device that rotates the vinyl record so that a needle type device can vibrate in the grooves to play the record. I mean the one you inherit probably won't last the rest of your life::))
Sheesh, I have a married grandchild who's older than you are. Also a cat named Tora. Also several pairs of socks. :p
My socks wear out before they're 30. My ties, on the other hand, live longer......
