View Full Version : Email Accounts

I understand that the default email account is also a catchall account. It recieves mail sent to the domain without regard to what precedes the @domainname.com. This would lead me to believe that there is no reason to create other mail accounts.
#1. BUT, doesn't the use of an autoresponder require an account name?
#2. Must I have an account to send mail with that name? For example, if I want to send mail with the name joe@domainname.com, must there be an account there with that name?
#3. When that account name's mail is forwarded, what can I do to automatically delete forwarded messages? Other than logging in as that user and manually deleting them.
TIA, I certainly appreciate all the experience and knowledge you are willing to share.

1. No, you can create an autoresponder without a "real" account behind it.
2. Yes, in order to really send email from an account, the account must exist. So for example, sales@alphaomegahosting.com doesnt really exist. However, I am the catchall. So when messages are sent to sales, I get them. My reply comes from my own email.
3. I don't understand what you are asking. Can you explain a little further?

Sure, I'll try. Might take more words than are allowed::))
Email: d.williams@homeatlastfarms.com is forwarded to the catchall for that account: bobwms@homeatlastfarms.com
I use outlook express 6 as client to check bobwms@homeatlastfarms.com. I recieve mail addressed to d.williams@homeatlastfarms.com via the client. When I log into the d.williams email account via cp, I find copies of all the messages there and they must be manually deleted. The question is: "How can I setup an "autodelete after forward" function?
Thanks Again!

It would probably be best to delete the d.williams account and let the "catchall" catch those messages.

I understand. Since Mrs. Terbob enjoys her "personalised" email, I guess I'll be manually deleting them. Does your #2 answer in re:sales ever cause any confusion? I mean somebody send an email to sales and gets a reply from danny? But as I think about this, I'll bet your email recipients are probably more knowledgeable than ours are.

I don't reall think it would cause confusion, but I would hope it would appear to be a personalized response.

Is it possible to enable bouncing of messages? It's getting annoying getting email that really isn't going anywhere and shouldn't go anywhere...

No. Please do not enable this. Because most crap that is sent to you that you would really consider "crap" has forged headers and the bounces end up sitting in queue till they time out.

The other side of "bouncing" is that people whose email address has been "spoofed" sure get a lot of crap in their inbox.

Why not just set it so it automatically returns to sender and it's removed from the system?

Because if the sender is bogus, it stays in queue and tries for 3 days to deliver
