View Full Version : New to Owning a Domain

Hi everyone,
I'm brand new to owning my own domain name (just got the name last night), and the domain name itself is not working. I uploaded an index.html into the mainwebsite folder, which shows up on the preview url page, but it won't show up on my domain (artistic-styles.com).
How long will it take to show up on my domain?
Also, last night I tested sending myself an email, but that didn't work either, as it was sent back to me.
If anyone could help me out with any of these issues, I'd greatly appreciate it!
Thank you!
Marcia

Hi Marcia,
It takes at least 24 - 48 hours for a domain to propagate through the internet. You probably will be able to see your page with it tonight or tommorrow morning. Mail won't work until the name is propagated. There are quite a few variables to the above statements (especially from the ISP end of the works), but a a general rule they play out

marcia,
It does take some time to work (three days in my case). Since this is a first time domain for you... you did assign "artistic-styles.com" to AOH's name servers correct?
I hope that (basic ?) doesn't offend you, but I did have a person ask once why it was taking so long for his site to start working and I found out he never took the domain in question out of "park" :-)

Hi,
Thank you both for responding so quickly!
No, that basic question doesnt offend me:) I believe I changed them last night to the 2 alphaomegahosting.com nameservers I received in my signup email.... Are the IP addresses supposed to go somewhere too, or do I just ignore those?
Thanks again!
Marcia

If the registrar doesn't request IP's (and I think Network Solutions/Versign is one of the few that still does) then you can ignore them.

Nobody on this board has, or will accuse me of knowing a lot about domain propagation, but does this look like there is a registrar problem?

I just checked the whois on it and it is pointed to ns1 and ns2 alphaomegahosting.com.
Would that be the right nameservers, Danny. I'm sure you have already taken care of this, but I want to ramble on.

I imagine Danny is nearly task saturated with the server upgrade. Besides, there's a lot to be said for "rambling on".

NS1 and NS2 are fine. NS3 could be added, but NS1 and NS2 is more than sufficient.
