Greymatter configuration troubles

I'm trying to install Greymatter (web journaling program) onto our site. I've put all the files up in the correct directories, followed the instructions but crash landed when it comes to setting up the paths for the journal to be pointing.

This is what I have entered:

Local Log Path: ..
The main weblog/journal directory on your account, where your main index file is.

Local Entries/Archives Path: ../archives
The directory on your account where your entry files (current and archived) are to be stored.

Local CGI Path: .
The place on your account where you keep all your Greymatter CGI files ("gm*.cgi").

Website Log Path: http://www.parent-world.com/weblog
The website address of the directory where your main index file is.

Website Entries Path: http://www.parent-world.com/archives
The website address of the directory where all your entries are to be stored.

Website CGI Path: http://www.parent-world.com/cgi-bin
The website address of the directory where all your Greymatter CGI files are kept.

I get an error message when performing the diagnostic & repair saying "Can't create files in ../archives. Make sure the entries/archives path is correctly configured and that this directory is CHMODed to 777." That particular directory is CHMODed correctly but the two above are CHMODed only to 755 and I can't change it from my end. Could this be my problem or is there something else I haven't done?

Or am I unhelpable :bawling: lol ;)

I am not exactly sure where your setting these options. I went to the account to see some of the paths but couldn't find a config file. I did load up gm.cgi and got a login prompt.

most likely that you will need a cron job? i have a web turn based game and the game needs to update every 15 minutes (i've set it like that) and i use a cron job

Finally something I can help someone with. I use Greymatter and it works great on AOH.
Local Log Path: /home/AOHusername/public_html/weblog
Local Entries/Archives Path: /home/AOHusername/public_html/weblog/archives
Local CGI Path: /home/AOHusername/public_html/cgi-bin
The other paths seem OK. Make sure all your cgi files were uploaded in text mode not binary. Most gm files in the cgi-bin are 755 except for the following...
gm-authors.cgi 0 k 666
gm-banlist.cgi 0 k 666
gm-config.cgi 0 k 666
gm-counter.cgi 0 k 666
gm-cplog.cgi 21 k 666
gm-entrylist.cgi 6 k 666
gm-templates.cgi 21 k 666

Unfortunately I myself will be installing a perl script soon...d'oh...unfortunately the best thing on the market was written in perl...nothing else even came close.

The good news is it's an awesome piece of high quality GPL software :D

Getting the same message still.

"Can't create files in ../html/archives. Make sure the entries/archives path is correctly configured and that this directory is CHMODed to 777." I'm only stabbing here but as far as I can understand, CHMOD 755 means the Owner has all permissions, but the group and public (users) don't have write permissions. Am I a group member...and in that can't write to the server? I'm not completely sure? lol....see now I've confused myself haahaa.

CHMOD 755 should do it..777 can lead to security problems and I've never encountered a case where 755 didn't work...

Forgive me for being dense, but are you editing the gm.cgi file to put this information in, or are you opening it in a browser to put in the config. If it is the latter, I need a username/password. PM me with it if this is the case.

Your archives directory should be a sub folder of greymatter. In your case ../public_html/weblog/archives. 777 is not required because 755 does work. The offer still stands for hands on help.
Greymatter works great for blogs but have you considered Movable Type (http://movabletype.org/). This program (MT (http://movabletype.org/)) is still being developed where greymatter has stopped. The only reason I stayed with GM is that my family prefers it's simplicity for menu layout and posting topics.

The info is entered via a browser by launching gm.cgi. You will needed to be added as an author with config permissions. The files and archives folder have to be in the correct location for everything to work.

Sorry I've been away for a while.

I might try that Movable Type. Thanks heaps for that link....it looks great.

At the moment the login and password are just the default. But I'll uninstall it and put on the movable type and see how that goes. If it doesn't work I'm not concerned....I'll just forget the idea haahaa.
