View Full Version : Getting rid of excess files on server
I was viewing my disk usage and was surprised to find what was taking up most of my space...not my image files, but stat reports...urchin stats, webalizer, analog, etc. Is there a way to purge some of these files (like the stats from a year ago or so) without deleting an integral part of the stat package?
Also, I notice that my .spamassassin file is over 12 megs! Is the script that large, or what is it that's making it so big? Do I need to purge something from there as well?

You are correct in that the stats create a considerable amount of disk space usage. You are welcome to delete the ones you don't use.
As far as the .spamassassin thing, it basically consists of a list of filters used to identify spam.
How do I delete it...just through my ftp program? There's a lot of directories and files, how do I know what's OK to delete and what would cause things to mess up if it was gone? Is there an easier way through cPanel?

You can delete them via ftp. It should be pretty safe to delete under /home/youruser/tmp/
If you would like for us to do this for you, just submit a ticket and we will take care of it.
But I'm still unsure just which files to delete. For example:
I have something called "awstats", and in that folder are just a bunch of .txt files, so it looks safe to delete the months i don't want of those.
There is also a stat package called "webalizer". Folder contains a bunch of .png files (probably for the graph it generates), some html files, and a big fat file called "dns_cache.db." it's about 21 megs. There's also a "webalizer.current" that is over a meg, and "webalizer.hist" which is about half a meg. Wonder if it's safe to delete those or if it'll screw me up for the future.
I also have a stat package called "Urchin Stats" and in my urchin folder, there are more directories:
bin
configs
data (this is the only folder that looks like it actually contains data files)
etc
lib (which looks like it could be an alias to something)
util
Not sure if I am safe to delete any or all of these without deleting the entire functionality of the stat package.
Hope I've explained myself a little better here about my question of which files are safe to delete.
I don't really want to submit a ticket for this, just as long as I know which *part* of the stats packages are ok to delete without messing up the script or something.

Each of the folders you listed in quotes represents a different webstat reporting software. It may include any of the following:
analog
webalizer
awstats
urchin
Which one do you no longer want to maintain the data from?

I don't want to delete any of the packages, just the old data from them, like everything over a year old or so. Or would that be a negligible gain of space? If that's the case, then I'll just leave it as is.

There is an excellent freeware program called FTPpie that produces piecharts depicting storage space used for a given domain or directory. Each slice can be clicked on to "drill" down to see where the "storage hogs" live. It's at: ftpPie (http://www.satsignal.net/)
Enjoy!

Does anyone have a script that would open each of those files, delete the entries older than {6 weeks, 8 months, customisable time frame} and could be ran by crontab?
Compressing and rotating them might be a better idea:

Has anyone an opinion of this, ran from crontab monthly?
If it looks like I don't know what I'm asking, it's only because I don't!
